What is AAT?

AAT or Association of Accounting Technicians is a globally recognized professional body for accounting technicians, offering qualifications and memberships that represent a level of competence recognized in the field of accounting and finance. AAT qualifications are widely respected and recognized in the industry, providing a practical, industry-focused entry route into the profession.

AAT offers a range of accounting and finance qualifications, from introductory to advanced levels. These qualifications are designed for individuals starting their career in accounting or for those already working in finance but seeking formal recognition of their skills. Completing AAT qualifications can lead to further career opportunities in accounting, membership in professional bodies, and progression to chartered accountancy qualifications with organizations such as the ACCA (Association of Chartered Certified Accountants), CIMA (Chartered Institute of Management Accountants), and ICAEW (Institute of Chartered Accountants in England and Wales).

How many levels are there in AAT?

The Association of Accounting Technicians (AAT) qualification is typically structured into three main levels:

  • Level 2 - Foundation Certificate in Accounting: This is the entry-level qualification, introducing the basic principles of accounting and finance. It's suitable for those with little or no accounting experience.
  • Level 3 - Advanced Diploma in Accounting: This intermediate level builds on the foundational knowledge, introducing more complex accounting tasks, such as preparing financial statements and managing budgets.
  • Level 4 - Professional Diploma in Accounting: This is the highest level of AAT qualification, covering higher-level accounting tasks, including managing budgets, evaluating financial performance, and preparing tax returns.

Upon completion of the AAT Level 4, individuals are eligible to apply for AAT full membership and achieve professional MAAT status. Some individuals may then choose to progress to chartered accountancy, with the AAT qualification providing exemptions from certain exams across professional chartered accountancy bodies.

Who can register for AAT?

The Association of Accounting Technicians (AAT) is open for registration to a wide range of individuals, including:

  • Students with No Prior Experience: Individuals who are just beginning their career in finance and accounting can start with the Level 2 Foundation Certificate. There are no formal entry requirements for this level, making it accessible to school leavers or career changers without previous experience or qualifications in accounting.
  • Professionals in the Field: Those who are already working in accounting or finance might start at a higher level, depending on their experience and existing qualifications. They might need to provide evidence of their work experience or prior learning to qualify for direct entry to the Advanced Diploma (Level 3) or the Professional Diploma (Level 4).
  • Individuals with Related Qualifications: People who have completed related studies, such as a university degree in a finance-related field, may receive exemptions from certain AAT exams and could start at a higher level of the AAT qualification.
  • International Students: The AAT qualifications are recognized internationally, so individuals from outside the UK can also register for AAT courses, either through distance learning providers or at institutions in their home country that offer AAT courses.

It's important to note that while there are no specific academic requirements for the entry-level qualification, a good understanding of English and Maths will be beneficial as these are core skills used in accounting. Individuals can check with the AAT or an accredited training provider for specific guidance tailored to their circumstances.
